In this issue, the team at The Clarke Edwards Partnership Consider...Why are salaries not always included in job vacancies?

Introduction

This is a question we are often asked and something we see heatedly debated on many online forums and media platforms. We have given this subject plenty of thought over the years and whilst we appreciate that many can view this as a way of keeping salaries down, we very much view this on the flipside and feel that firms do this to ensure that all those with suitable experience are considered and do not miss out.

The popularity of search engines and signing up to job vacancy boards has many benefits, including a daily list of potential roles direct to your inbox, but it does mean for firms that by simply including a salary in a job advertisement (and often suggested by the platform rather than the firm) that their advertisement may not arrive in the inbox of their next and perfect new employee.

It’s very difficult for firms to ‘capture all’ in one job advertisement and in a set salary bracket and each of us of course have our own and very different priorities for the day job! It’s not an easy task to set a specific salary for a role – there’s so many factors to consider, and firms are potentially at risk on missing out on a ‘perfect’ candidate if they set ridged salary brackets:

  • Perhaps a more senior candidate seeking a higher salary could take on the role and bring a client following and additional work into the firm to balance a higher than budgeted salary?
  • Is there an opportunity for an existing member of staff to take the next step in their career development and move towards a more supervisory and mentoring position allowing a more junior hire to step into a role?
  • Could the role potentially be offered as part-time or remote working for those that require less support and appeal to a high performer, seeking a higher salary but less hours per week?

If you are seeking a new opportunity and finding the lack of available salary information frustrating and would like some support, using a legal recruitment specialist can be a huge benefit. At The Clarke Edwards Partnership, our relationship with clients and their hiring managers allows us to navigate the financial side of things on your behalf.
